PRACTICE & PROCESS

Serena Maria Dicks is a London-based ceramic artist. She completed her MA at the Royal College of Art (2024), where she was awarded the Märit Rausing Scholarship. Prior, Serena studied her BA in Ceramics and Glass at University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Serena’s practice explores gestural mark-making to record traces of memory, and materiality. Inspired by the linear rhythms found within ancient and earthly lineages, her ceramics serve as a site of connection between past and present worlds, revealing how clay can embody the vernacular of place and time.

Through painting, marking, and hand-building, physical gesture is exerted upon the material, allowing the surfaces to emerge and evolve.

Serena embraces dry, unglazed surfaces for their raw material honesty, creating textures that echo a sense of deep time, earthliness, and ancient rawness. In a coalescence of form and surface, her work seeks to offer new grounds for connecting to our material history through the intimacy of the mark.
